Choir Guidelines

1. Purpose of the Choir

The purpose of our choir is to support and beautify the worship of God through prayerful singing. Participation in the choir is a ministry offered in service to Christ, His Church, and our parish community.

Our choir should cultivate an atmosphere of humility, dedication, learning, mutual support, and prayer. Respect, cooperation, charity, and a willingness to learn are essential. While none of us is perfect, we are called to offer our voices and talents to God to the best of our ability.

Choir members are encouraged to participate because they desire to serve the Church through music and prayer. The choir functions best when members support the director's musical decisions and work together toward the common goal of serving the worship of the Church. While we all experience difficult times and competing responsibilities, participation in the choir should be approached with a spirit of joy, commitment, and love for our parish and its services.

Participation in the choir presumes a basic commitment to the liturgical life of our parish, including regular attendance at services.

2. Spiritual Disposition

Church singing is an act of prayer and worship, not a performance. As members of the choir, we seek to glorify God rather than ourselves and to help lead the faithful in prayer through the beauty of sacred music.

Participation in the choir is both a privilege and a responsibility. Choir members should strive to cultivate humility, patience, faithfulness, and a willingness to learn. Musical corrections and guidance should be received in a spirit of growth and cooperation, recognizing that our common goal is to serve the worship of the Church as effectively as possible. These corrections should be made primarily by the director unless otherwise indicated.

Choir members are encouraged to approach rehearsals and services prayerfully, remembering that the choir's ministry is an offering to God and an important part of the liturgical life of the parish.

Members should extend charity, encouragement, and respect to one another, recognizing that every member contributes to the life and ministry of the choir.

3. Membership and Participation

The choir welcomes parishioners who have a sincere desire to learn and serve. Musical experience is beneficial but not required. Those who are willing to learn, receive guidance, and work to improve will be supported in their growth by both the choir and the choir director.

Not every member will be asked to sing every piece of music. Different pieces require different levels of preparation, vocal ability, rehearsal attendance, and musical readiness. Participation in certain selections may therefore be limited to specific singers or sections of the choir.

Voice parts and section assignments are determined by the choir director according to vocal range, musical ability, and the needs of the choir. Members may occasionally be asked to sing a different part to help support the overall balance and effectiveness of the ensemble.

4. Liturgical Commitment

Because the choir serves an important liturgical function, members should make every effort to attend services regularly and arrive on time.

Choir members should make every effort to be present in the choir area at least 10–15 minutes before the beginning of services unless other arrangements have been made with the choir director.

If a choir member is unable to sing for a scheduled service, he or she should notify the choir director as far in advance as possible so appropriate adjustments can be made.

Regular attendance and reliability help ensure consistency and allow the choir to serve the parish effectively.

5. Rehearsals

Regular rehearsal attendance is strongly encouraged. Rehearsals allow us to grow musically, learn new music, strengthen existing repertoire, and serve the parish more effectively.

Some music requires additional preparation or rehearsal attendance. If a choir member has not participated in the rehearsal of a particular piece, that member should not sing that selection during services unless specifically invited to do so by the choir director.

Participation in more advanced repertoire may be limited to those who have attended the necessary rehearsals and demonstrated readiness for the music being sung.

Members who cannot attend rehearsals regularly are still welcome to participate in the appropriate portions of the choir's ministry as determined by the choir director.

5.1 Regular Choir Rehearsals

These rehearsals are for all choir members and focus on current liturgical music, upcoming feast days, and the continued development of the choir's core repertoire.

Everyone who sings regularly should make every effort to attend these rehearsals.

5.2 Music Theory Rehearsals

These rehearsals are intended for those with little or no formal musical training, as well as experienced singers who wish to strengthen their understanding of music theory.

Instruction will focus on musical fundamentals, common liturgical music, and practical skills needed for choir participation. All are welcome to attend.

5.3 Advanced Rehearsals

These rehearsals are scheduled as needed and may focus on new music, difficult harmonies, concerts, special services, or other advanced repertoire.

The schedule will generally be published twice each year, prior to Nativity and prior to Pascha, though additional rehearsals may be added as needed.

Participation in advanced repertoire is determined by rehearsal attendance, preparation, demonstrated readiness, and the needs of the choir. Final assignments are made at the discretion of the choir director.

6. Personal Preparation

Choir members are encouraged to review music outside of rehearsals whenever possible.

A YouTube playlist and other learning resources may be provided to assist singers in becoming familiar with upcoming music and strengthening their individual preparation.

Those participating in more advanced repertoire should expect to devote additional time to preparation outside of scheduled rehearsals.

7. Music and Choir Materials

Choir binders and music are parish property and are provided for the use of choir members.

Choir binders are not to be removed from the church without the permission of the choir director.

Music contained in the binders should not be marked, highlighted, altered, reorganized, or removed without the permission of the choir director.

All current and prospective choir members will be given access to the choir Google Drive with our music which they can view or print at home.

8. Conduct in the Choir Area

The choir area should reflect the prayerful nature of our ministry.

Choir members should strive to maintain an atmosphere of reverence before, during, and after services. Conversations should be kept to a minimum during services, and attention should remain focused on prayer, worship, and the direction of the choir director.

Mobile phones and other distractions should be avoided whenever possible during rehearsals and services. Tablet- type devices  for the purpose of accessing our music during services are acceptable

9. Solos and Small Ensembles

From time to time, services, concerts, or special events may include solos, small ensembles, or other specialized musical assignments.

The selection of soloists and ensemble participants is made by the choir director based upon the musical needs of the piece, preparation, demonstrated readiness, and the needs of the choir.

10. Communication

Choir communications, schedules, rehearsal announcements, and other important information will generally be distributed through the choir email list.

Members are encouraged to read choir communications regularly and respond when necessary so that rehearsals and services may be planned effectively.

11. Conflict Resolution

Questions, concerns, suggestions, or misunderstandings regarding choir matters should be addressed directly and respectfully with the choir director.

Choir members are encouraged to communicate openly and charitably, avoiding gossip, complaints, or criticism directed toward other choir members. Differences of opinion will inevitably arise from time to time, but they should be handled in a spirit of Christian love, humility, and mutual respect.

The choir functions best when members support one another, work cooperatively, and seek solutions that contribute to the peace and unity of the parish.

Matters that cannot be resolved through discussion with the choir director may be brought to the parish priest for guidance and resolution.

12. Final Note

These guidelines are intended to foster a healthy, welcoming, and prayerful choir culture. They are not meant to be rigid rules, but rather a framework to help us serve God and our parish faithfully and effectively.

Individual circumstances may vary and will be considered at the discretion of the choir director under the guidance of the parish priest.

Every voice in our choir is welcome and appreciated. As our choir continues to grow, greater opportunities and responsibilities come through preparation, reliability, commitment, and demonstrated readiness.
